About This Album

Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On on vinyl LP (Universal Motown, 2008 reissue). The nine-song cycle opens with the classics What’s Going On, Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) and Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler). Gaye produced the album himself and was backed by Motown’s Funk Brothers, in the session band’s first official credit. The title track topped the R&B chart for five weeks and hit No. 2 on the Hot 100, while the album stayed on the Top LPs for over a year. Berry Gordy refused to release the record, and the single went on to become Motown’s fastest-selling at the time.
