About This Album

Neil Young's Hitchhiker on Black Vinyl LP (Reprise, 2017, gatefold with folded lyrics poster) preserves a lost session in its purest form. Recorded in a single night on August 11, 1976 at Indigo Studio in Malibu, the ten solo acoustic tracks — just Young, his guitar and producer David Briggs in the room — include early versions of Powderfinger, Pocahontas and the title track, plus the first-ever releases of Hawaii and Give Me Strength. Reprise felt the tapes sounded more like a set of demos, so the album stayed in the vault for forty-one years; it finally surfaced in 2017 and bowed at No. 20 on the Billboard 200.
