Seiji Ozawa / Boston Symphony Orchestra - Respighi: Pines of Rome; Roman Festivals; Fountains of Rome [180g 2LP]
About This Album
This is the acclaimed 1977 recording of Ottorino Respighi’s Roman Trilogy — Pines of Rome (Pini di Roma, 1924), Roman Festivals (Feste Romane, 1929), and Fountains of Rome (Fontane di Roma, 1917) — performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa. Originally captured on 8-track analogue tape by Deutsche Grammophon in 1977, this landmark recording has long been regarded as a reference for Respighi’s richly orchestrated symphonic poems. The Boston Symphony brings scale, warmth, and dramatic intensity to these four-movement tone poems, which together form the cornerstone of Respighi’s contribution to early-20th-century programme music.
About This Pressing
This is the 2026 Deutsche Grammophon Original Source Series reissue: a 180-gram gatefold 2LP, hand-numbered limited edition (3,500 copies worldwide). Remastered using 100% pure analogue (AAA) technique at Emil Berliner Studios by Rainer Maillard and Sidney C. Meyer, cut directly from the original 1-inch 8-track tapes. Pressed by Optimal in Germany. For Respighi’s famous nightingale passage in the third movement of Pines of Rome, the producers faithfully recreated his original 1910 gramophone birdsong recording using period methods — played on an acoustic gramophone in the studio’s echo chamber and mixed live during cutting. 3 sides of music + 1 blank side.
