About This Album

The Smiths’ Meat Is Murder on black vinyl LP (Rhino Records, 2023 remastered reissue of the 1985 album) is the band’s second studio album and their only UK number one. It sharpened the jangle of the debut with muscle, from the anti-corporal-punishment opener The Headmaster Ritual and the rockabilly-tinged Rusholme Ruffians to I Want The One I Can’t Have and the brooding That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore. Recorded at Amazon Studios in Liverpool and Ridge Farm in Surrey, it paired Morrissey’s most political lyrics with Johnny Marr’s most inventive guitar work.
